Can You Use an HSA or FSA for Hearing Aids? (2026)

November 3, 2026 · HEARVELA

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) or a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you can use it to pay for hearing aids. That includes over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids you buy online, like the HEARVELA Mini and Pro. Because the money in these accounts goes in before tax, paying this way can lower what the hearing aids really cost you.

Are hearing aids a qualified medical expense?

Yes. The IRS lists hearing aids, and the batteries to run them, as qualified medical expenses in Publication 502. That is the list HSA and FSA plans follow. You do not need a prescription for an OTC hearing aid to qualify, because the device itself is a hearing aid.

Related costs usually qualify too, such as replacement ear tips, chargers and cleaning supplies for your hearing aids. Your plan has the final say, so check with your plan administrator if you are unsure about an item.

Option 1: pay with your HSA or FSA card

Most plans give you a debit card. You can use it at checkout like any other card.

  • Enter the card details at checkout as a normal debit or credit card.
  • Keep your order confirmation email. Your plan may ask for it later to confirm the purchase.
  • If the card is declined, it is usually because the plan cannot tell what was bought. Pay another way and use option 2.

Option 2: pay normally and get reimbursed

You can also pay with your own card and ask your plan to pay you back.

  1. Place your order and keep the confirmation email or receipt.
  2. Log in to your HSA or FSA account online or in its app.
  3. Choose "submit a claim" or "reimburse me" and upload the receipt.
  4. The plan sends the money to your bank account, usually within a few days to a couple of weeks.

Your receipt should show the store name, the date, the item (for example "HEARVELA Mini hearing aids") and the amount paid. Our order emails include all of these.

HSA vs FSA: what is the difference?

HSA FSA
Who can have one People with a high-deductible health plan Usually offered through an employer
Does the money roll over? Yes, it stays yours year after year Often "use it or lose it" by the plan deadline
Covers hearing aids? Yes Yes

If you have FSA money left near the end of your plan year, hearing aids are a useful way to spend it before it runs out. Check your plan's deadline and any grace period.

Buying hearing aids for a parent

HSA and FSA money can generally be used for your spouse and dependents. A parent usually counts only if they are your dependent for tax purposes. If you are not sure, ask your plan administrator or a tax professional before paying with your account.

What about Medicare?

Original Medicare does not pay for hearing aids, so an HSA, FSA or a Medicare Advantage plan with hearing benefits is often the most practical way to lower the cost. We cover this in more detail in Does Medicare cover hearing aids?
